The girls in HerSpace Junior have been working very hard on their Arts Award this term.
The first thing they made were clay pots. They used different techniques to do this, and learnt how to fix their pots if they developed any holes. Whilst painting the pots, we learnt about the Japanese art of ‘Kintsukuroi’, where broken pottery is repaired with gold. Some of the girls took inspiration from this and painted cracks in their pots gold. It looks amazing!
The next skill the girls learnt was to make coloured Paper Mache by soaking paper in water. They created designs in their sketchbooks and then recreated them. We used lots of different colours and made some lovely designs.
Our most recent session was about the 100-year anniversary of the women gaining the right to vote in the UK. We learnt about the history of the Suffragettes and the Suffragists. Then, we created art work using their colour themes, including beautiful suffragette sashes and rosettes.
During our sessions we have also been reading ‘Bedtime Stories for Rebel Girls’. The girls have taken turns choosing which inspirational woman to read about and have learnt all about individuals such as Rosa Parks, Amelia Erhart and more.
