Our focus in HerSpace Senior has been around female artists who make a living out of art. We spent last term preparing for a Christmas market. The young women made some amazing candles, using oils to make them smell amazing. They learnt how to melt the wax, to measure its temperature, and to pour it into various containers. They also used the art of marbling to create some fantastic prints. We then learnt to frame these professionally so that they could be sold.
Our amazing lead artist, Amelia, also brought in her woodwork equipment and taught us to make round keyrings out of branches. As it was a Christmas market, we also made cards and labels. The young women were very thoughtful when considering designs that would be simple but effective and easy to recreate. As a finishing touch, we designed a label for our group, which we attached to all our products.
The market was incredibly successful. The stall looked gorgeous and the young women sold 70% of their products. They also made the decision to give half of their profit to Sobell House.
Aside from our amazing market project we have also had two amazing female artists visit us to show us what they do. Hattie does a lot of carpentry as part of her art and came in to teach us how to make stools. Each girl made a hexagon-shaped stool and learnt how to make sure they would be durable and comfortable. The other artist who came to see us was Rosie, owner of ‘A Rosie Life’. She taught us how to make pompom garlands using professional equipment. She also gave us some amazing tips on how to start and run your own business.
The young women from HerSpace have been absolutely fantastic over the last few months, and are now starting to experiment with wooden sculptures and free collages.
