This term, Herspace JR (6-11yrs) and Herspace SR (11-16yrs) visual art and wellbeing groups have been exploring the theme of identity through the concept of “The Power of Me”.
We have been inspired by Greta Thunberg, the Swedish activist who, at age 15, began protesting outside the Swedish parliament about the need for immediate action to combat climate change, which led to thinking about what skills and passions we have to contribute to society.
The groups have explored their own portraits and also their alter-egos or fantasy characters, through drawing, print-making, collage and by decorating 3D heads.
Some of the Herspace JR participants described their heads in the following ways:
Nature; let’s take a look at the world and see what we’ve done
My head is a mermaid because I like going to the beach
My head is called Sci-Fi Girl because I like Sci-Fi
My head is love
My head has a scary underwater theme
My head is mermaid themed
Herspace Jr happens at Ark-T on a Monday 3.30-5.30pm led by artist Su Frizzell, and Herspace SR happens on a Thursday from 4-6pm led by artist Biddy Hudson.
